Butterflies
MC Green & Jennifer Donelan

We have been busy since our last newsletter. At the end of April, Sunni joined the Butterflies. We love having a new Butterfly friend. We also have some bad news. Both Beatrice and Emilio will be moving out of state this summer. Sabella will also be leaving us to spend the summer at home with her sister. We wish them all the best in the new adventures.

With the new season, we have been very busy outdoors. We are grateful for having boots and jackets here each day so that no matter what wacky Wisconsin weather we get we are ready. On our walks we have collected many kinds of wild flowers and sticks, splashed in mud puddles with our boots, and found many large rocks for our playground in the back yard. On one rock collecting trip we found a pair of mallard ducks in the water by the little bridge. On another walk we found a tiny bunny that had jumped into the street. Once we got it off the street it ran super fast under a pine tree. In the back yard we built a lasagna garden. You make layers of newspaper, peat moss, and grass clippings. We planted corn, beans, and pumpkins. We have plans to plant gourds, sunflowers and other flowers. We hope that we will have success stories to tell in our next newsletter.

During the past few weeks we have taken multi-media artwork to new levels. In particular we have added glue to artwork. We have added it to play dough, flubber, drawings and even water color paintings. We have also been using play dough and flubber on paper instead of markers or crayons. We have been doing a lot of rhyming lately and are able to think of more and more things that sound like words we know. Another area of significant progress is using the bathroom. More and more of us are working hard at and are becoming more and more successful at staying dry. We're getting to be big boys and girls!

We want to mention a couple of things about our lesson plans. We will be working on a particular focus for a month at a time. We will continue to have a seasonal focus as well. As in the past we work on math and literacy activities every day. The reason for this change is that repetition leads to mastery. When we know a story and can make a point about something or answer a question about something we've read it, makes us feel smart. Having many art activities out every day for a month at a time allows us time to practice and get better at a wide range of fine motor skills. We love feeling smart and capable. Several weeks ago we added a section Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards (WMELS). These are included so you know what we are learning. During the next few weeks we will be redesigning the whole lesson plan to better link it to the WMELS. In an effort to save paper, copies of the lesson plan are available on the sign-in shelf. If you want one and we are out of them, just let us know.
